1/5 billion pounds not to charge over 70's for a TV license|||I don't know. The government seems to be able to produce figures out of thin air to justify its own arguments, but I suppose all politicians do this. It is back to the old Thatcherite capitalist philosophy of knowing the cost of everything and the value of nothing|||1/5 of 1,000,000,000 = 拢200 mil.
The current price of a licence is 拢145.50
拢200,000,000 / 拢145.50 = 1,374,570 licences.
Maybe thats the number of pensioner households that buy licences.
Probably less licences are purchased than that though, as the cost of enforcing the licence laws run into millions with those pesky licence inspectors and call centre parots "Are you phoning to pay for your licence, are you phoning to pay".
The number of pensioners in this fine land is much higher, but only 1 licence per household is needed.
The BeeB is nothing more than a cash generating stich up.
Advertising now!! :-)|||Simple arithmetic.
TV licence is 拢145. If there are 1379310 people over 70 then it will cost 1/5 billion pounds not to charge them for a tv licence.
There are a lot more than 1379310 people over 70 so it would cost a lot more than 1/5 billion pounds.
