What on Earth can we possibly do...?

When our money is really tight, the only car we have is beat up with expired tabs, a defective taillight and blinker, we can't afford another car, we keep getting tickets because there is no other way he can get to work and the courts want us to pay an arm and a leg just so he can keep his license?|||I am so sorry to hear of your loss and troubles. I would suggest that you go on the cheap for the short term. Get bicycles. It is a tough one, but it is better than walking. Check with your neighbors and see if you can tag along with someone. Look into carpooling, especially for work. This will give you time to address the car issues at a less stressful pace. Park the car until you get it fixed. Send some money in for the tickets - as much as you can afford. It shows good faith on your part to take care of them. Get rid of the ticket issue, fix the car and then register it. That would seem to be the sequence of events from what you have described your situation to be.

Wishing you all the best.|||You can replace the tail and blinker lights with bulbs from wal-mart for fairly cheap (under $30 for both I believe).

You can also go talk to the tag office and see if they will work out a payment plan with you for new tags (like...$20 a week or something).

Finally, speak in private with a judge from the traffic court and explain the problem...if you offer to pay what you can (and bring in your budget sheet showing where your finances go) they may also help you set up a payment plan.

Basically, communication is key. By ignoring people, they get mad but if you work with them you are more likely to get help.

If they truely cannot do anything, see if you can get a short term loan from a bank or put it on a cc as a last resort. (Also, can he carpool, take a bus, etc...look around!)|||Get two jobs. Lots of people do it.
