Subduing the earth 1:28??

Humanity has strayed so far from nature, we now think we are above it. We are in fact we simply a part of nature, not it鈥檚 keeper or owner, if the earth suffers then so does humanity.

Why has the statement in Genesis (1:28) been taken as a license for humanity to do what ever they want with nature?|||I don't think Genesis 1:28 is the whole of the problem, Hala. Part of it, yes, but just a part. The other parts are largely comprised of Christian Fundamentalists proclaiming the end of the world to be just around the corner. They see so many resources, given to us by Gen 1:28,that the world can use them up like its no tomorrow because they believe there isn't going to be that tomorrow.

One must also factor in Capitalism and its friend Greed. Especially in America, the idea of being a consumer is heavily emphasized. Big businesses want us to buy their products. These big businesses don't see the resources they are depleting, or the health risks they are causing--all the big businesses are seeing is money. Money, money, money; the more the better. When asked if they care about the environment, their employees, and consumers they will lie that they do, but in reality they do not.

* Fuzbot -- The OUR is Elohim. Its a Hebrew word meaning Pantheon, or multitude of Gods and Goddesses. Yes; it possesses both female and masculine attributes to the divine. It should be translated as the Gods' or Pantheon's image if you'd like my personal thought. But, this part that you refer to is different from the one Hala addresses. Geneses has two different creation stories in it. I say this based on the mannerisms used in both, as well as the characters therein.|||yup. Thanks :)

|||Jehovah is not nature.|||Subduing the earth, and destroying it, are not the same.|||You mean when god said:

Man is created in OUR image

Whos OUR ?|||the license did not come from the scripture but from the fall of man. there is no license, just flesh.|||Subdue doesn't mean destroy or ruin. It does mean to act as managers who have the authority to run everything as God pleased.|||God have us the earth to live in and it is our responsiblity to take care of God's creation. God created man in his image and he did not with the animals. Just as there is a hierarchy in the animal world, we are above the animals; however, that does not give us the right to abuse it.|||A very large portion of the problem is when something is translated from one language to another, much is lost in the translation.

Mankind was NEVER given permission to destroy or disrespect the earth/nature that God made.|||we are our brothers(sisters)keeper we have a place on this earth to look after it and all the creatures that are on this great planet. The natural resources on this planet are here to be used NOT abused, the animals on this planet are here for transportation, agriculture and yes for food purposes we must treat them respect. So if the earth breaks down then all humanity will also break down it will be inevitable,we must look after the earth and all its creatures properly.
