And when did this start? Forgive me, but I haven't bought a new TV in AGES (obviously). This just sounds crazy to me. |||The people talking about TV licenses live in the UK. They have needed licenses since 1936 which is when commercial broadcasts started in the UK. It pays for the BBC which is kind of like the US's PBS on steroids.
It's a criminal offense in the UK to use a TV without a license!
It didn't start with TV; even before then you needed a radio license to listen to a (line powered) radio.
I kid you not.
There have never been TV receiver licenses in the US.|||A TV License was initially a method the UK used to support the BBC. This is a strange concept to Americans who are used to TV paid for by commercial advertisers (and the endless commercials that go along with that method).
So, that's the logic behind it. Technology, however is clouding the concept and also making enforcement more difficult. Stay tuned for further developments.|||Wtf a tv license never heard of that crap before.
but i looked it up and here is the info. I honestly think its stupid but whatever.
