"Despite approaching police about the attack, she was arrested after admitting to "illegal drinking" outside licensed premises as well as having sexual intercourse outside marriage. Her fianc茅 was also charged with the same offences."
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnew鈥?/a>|||Don`t interfere with other countries laws . It could rebound
Imagine life in UK, if sex outside marriage were introduced here
With our moral standards almost every woman in the country would be serving time in prison|||These things are illegal in Dubai. You are an idiot if you go to Dubai and then drink or have sex with just anyone. As much as it is, in my view, wrong for the law to be like this, Dubai is one of those countries you have to be careful with. This woman was neither respecting or following the laws of this country, and as such it is perfectly reasonable that she be arrested. Dubai's view that it is the fault of the woman for being raped means it is very difficult to get anywhere - if you're showing an inch of flesh they will say it was provocation. This is of course wrong, but that is the law and she should have known that and done what any sensible person does in this part of the world, and only gone out with a male family member/friend accompanying them to avoid such situations.
Of course the police should also follow up the rape, but I think it is right she be arrested for the drinking, at least, as this is against the law.|||Your heading is a bit misleading, she admitted illegal drinking and having sex (with her fiance) out of marriage. Both are illegal in Dubai. The fact that she was raped doesn't come into it at that point and is a separate issue.
If someone came here to the UK and broke two laws, lets say driving without insurance and road tax but got mugged at the ATM. Assuming they drive to the police station to report the mugging and the police check their documents, why should they not be arrested for no tax and insurance?
You should respect the laws of the country you are going to, I expect people to come to the UK and obey our laws, if they don't they deserve to be punished. The rapist in Dubai obviously deserves to be punished and the sentence in Dubai for rape could be death, it's more interesting to see what happens there!|||As Charli has pointed out, there is very little in Dubai that has anything to do with being ethical.
Any Brits there know the score around illegal drinking and extra-marital sex. They should also know how local police would deal with an expat womans claim of rape.
It's a horrible horrible situation for the woman to be in, and in no way at all her fault that she was raped. However, at what point are ex pats going to decide that making a few quid tax free is not worth the risk of a barbaric justice system?|||Islamic people in an Islamic country really should know better than consuming alcohol and having sex outside marriage, when in Rome do as the Romans do.
It's not moral or ethical, but it is the law in Dubai, we can hardly complain about immigrants in this country not obeying our laws, when visitors from the UK go to other countries, knowing the law and breaking it.|||Of course by our standards this is entirely wrong and unethical, but you have to keep in mind that we are speaking about a society that is so far-fetched from our own Western/European standards. So, of course this is wrong and simply unacceptable in our culture- but you can't go to a completely foreign land, break their laws, and expect to be subject to the same set of legal jurisdiction we have here. It just doesn't work that way.|||yes it is illegal to drink in dubai, but this girl was staying in a hotel that was serving alcohol..WHERE WAS THE DUBAI LAW THEN?
she were staying in a seven star hotel the waiter followed her in to the toilet whilst she were drunk, cctv clearly shows the waiter in the ladies for 8 minutes.
international hotel with a reputation to keep, dubai with its battered economy, they had to twist this around and make her look the villan.
SHAME ON DUBAI, BUT NO EXCUSE FOR HER DRINKING!! SHE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THE LAW..PEACE.|||wow i think they need to look up what Rape means this was obviously against her will, there fore she broke a law with out wanting to.
she was forced into having sexule intercourse whicth evidentally forced her to brake the law even tho she had no intentions of doing so Sharia law SU/CKS. that is NOT JUSTICE AT ALL.|||'ethical' and 'dubai' are two words that do not exist next to each other. how is this surprising? that's like asking china where their ethics are when they sell unwanted female babies into the sex trade (their 1 child rule makes male babies in high demand)...the world is corrupt, it is being ran by unbelievably sick and evil governments.|||This highlights the reason our soldiers are in Afghanistan - the Sharia (Muslim law) has no respect for women and children.|||If you break the law in these countries you expect to pay the price. In the UK ,however,if you break the law you get let off because of your Human Rights. Don't worry though, sharia law will be here soon to clamp down on your licentious ways.|||Wake up. That is what it is like out there!
If you go to a medieval country (why?) you'd better expect medieval standards of "justice".|||When religion rules insanity takes over,|||Why can't we put away the muslim drug gangs that drive around in there BMWs in the UK?|||It is not ethical, moral or decent. It is Islamic and it will be law here in a few years so get used to it.|||in 50 years time it will be happening here
