Am i right that people in the UK are required to have a license to own a TV?

What on earth is that about? What exactly is the license for? How much is the fee, is it a yearly cost?

The fee is about $200/year and it pays for public broadcasting|||I wonder if there was a fee for watching TV in the U.S., if we would have a lower obesity rate.
